Released by Dotted Games in collaboration with The LEGO Group to celebrate NINJAGO’s 15th anniversary, LEGO NINJAGO: Destiny’s Bounty Adventures (designed by Jonas Resting-Jeppesen) hits a sweet spot for families and board game enthusiasts alike.
To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive at first. I was worried they were just going to slap the LEGO logo on a mundane, cash-grab board game.
I was completely wrong. LEGO NINJAGO is a legit, worthy tabletop game. Honestly, I was already having a blast just unboxing it and assembling the LEGO minifigures before we even started playing! And instead of pitting players against each other in a frantic race to hoard points, Destiny’s Bounty Adventures leans heavily into what made playing with LEGO so magical in the first place: true cooperation.
The Setup and the Ship
The game places 2 to 4 players squarely on the deck of Destiny’s Bounty, the ninjas’ iconic flying flagship. Villains are attacking from all sides, creeping in from the entranceways along the golden paths to reach vital areas of the ship. Your team has to hold the line together, because if those invading tokens reach spots like Wu's meditation area or the control center and fill up the Villain Track, it’s game over for everyone.

Pure Teamwork: You and your fellow players pick your favorite Ninja minifigures. Communication is key, it's mandatory. On your turn, you can actually ask neighboring Ninjas who are just one room away to rush in and join you to pool your total strength against a tough enemy! You’ll spend every round negotiating who covers which side of the ship, who handles incoming threats, and who needs to save their big moves.

Escalating Events & Encounters: Every turn starts with flipping an Event Card that forces new villain tokens onto the board or advances existing ones along the golden path toward vital ship locations. To keep things fresh, the game uses modular Adventure Cards that chain together to form a multi-chapter story arc, introducing new objectives and story events every six turns. It creates a palpable sense of rising tension, that classic "firefighting" mechanic that keeps everyone around the table completely locked in, even when it’s not their turn.

Unlocking Mastery & Upgrading Gear: As you defeat villains and collect Mastery Tokens by doing very Ninja things (like drinking tea or reading comic books with Sensei Wu), you fill up the Victory Track. Hitting certain spaces on the track unlocks brand-new Spinjitzu Tornadoes that physically attach to your baseplate, granting you extra movement speed and combat power! You also unlock Potential Cards, where you pause to physically build upgraded weapons and gear onto your LEGO minifigure, granting you permanent game-breaking powers like walking straight through walls.
Expanding the Tabletop Ecosystem: Monkey Palace & Brick Like This!
Destiny’s Bounty Adventures is the third in the line of thoughtful push into modern board gaming from Dotted Games. If you're curious how else LEGO bricks are being integrated into game mechanics, two other titles are well worth a look:
1. Monkey Palace
If you enjoy spatial puzzles and watching a physical structure take shape over the course of a game, Monkey Palace is a delight. Players compete to rebuild an ancient, overgrown jungle temple.
Instead of drawing lines on a pad or placing cardboard tiles, you are physically building 3D staircases and archways directly onto a LEGO baseplate. The higher and more cleverly you construct your pathways using columns and arches, the more Banana Points and Monkey Credits you score. By the end of the game, you made a custom 3D palace that didn't exist an hour ago (perfect for instagram!).
2. Brick Like This!
For game nights that lean more toward laughter, party vibes, and high-energy communication, Brick Like This! flips the script. Played in teams of two, one player acts as the Instructor (who can see a secret model diagram) and the other is the Builder.
The catch? The Instructor has to describe how to assemble the model using only verbal clues (no pointing, no touching the bricks) while the timer relentlessly ticks down. Throw in challenge cards that force you to build with one hand or restrict the Instructor to yes/no responses, and you get a game that instantly breaks the ice and generates non-stop laughter.

Looking at these games, I’m reminded of why so many of us fell in love with tabletop gaming in the first place.
