Last month, Chief Restoration Officer and tabletop titan Rob Daviau packed his bags and traveled halfway across the globe to the Philippines for the ALL ABOARD EXPO 2026. What an absolute treat for the local gaming community!

Not only did Rob bring his legendary presence, but he also treated attendees to an exclusive bombshell: revealing the brand-new art for the highly anticipated Unmatched Hellboy set for the very first time. Beyond that major reveal, Rob was blown away by the frantic fandom, sharing some glowing remarks about his trip:

"It was a complete (and wonderful) surprise to go to the All Aboard Expo ’26 in Metro Manila at the end of May. First off, the Philippines are very far from Massachusetts. Second off, the people there are wonderful. And, most importantly, they are very, very, very passionate about games, Unmatched in particular. Very passionate.

During the four-day convention, I saw fans of the game playing, talking, coming up to me to discuss the game. I signed (no lie) about 1,000 autographs. Foil cards, box tops, promo cards. Deadpool. I signed a number of Deadpool Call Me cards. You could barely get Deadpool in the United States and here, on the other side of the world, I signed lots of Deadpool. People talked about having a Filipino character (please, pitch us one. Not the deck, just the character), about reprints, licenses, and what’s next for Unmatched."

Having played Unmatched myself, I am consistently amazed by the explosive popularity of this tactical titan. Why has it captured the hearts of so many? It taps into the ultimate playground debate. The age-old question of who would win in a hypothetical heavyweight battle between legendary icons has fueled pop culture chatter for generations. We have all argued about whether Batman could beat Superman, or if a samurai could slice through a Viking.

Transforming that chaotic comic-book concept into a balanced, beautifully designed tabletop experience is a monumental task. Yet, Unmatched has completely mastered the formula. It stands as a brilliantly innovative battling system that brings your wildest dream matchups to life, tossing out tedious rulebooks and replacing them with fast-paced, positional combat.

The Genius of Tactical Cardboard Combat

As critics over at Meeple Mountain note in their deep dives, the true triumph of Unmatched lies in how it seamlessly handles asymmetry. It is a masterclass in card-driven combat where every single hero comes equipped with a completely custom deck tailored to their specific lore, personality, and fighting style. Playing as a calculating consulting detective feels entirely distinct from controlling a blood-sucking beast.

The game relies entirely on these cards for movement, defense, and mind-boggling special maneuvers. This deep mechanical variety ensures that no two characters share the same strategy. You have to master your fighter's specific rhythms, strengths, and limitations to outmaneuver your opponent. Reviewers frequently praise this perfect harmony of simple rules and rich, rewarding tactical depth, guaranteeing that no two sessions ever feel the same.

A Multiverse of Myth, Media, and Pop Culture

The system's expandable nature is where the fun truly multiplies, allowing players to mix, match, and mash up sets seamlessly. According to the ultimate buying guides from IGN, navigating the massive Unmatched ecosystem is half the fun because there is a flavor for every fandom.

  • Cobble & Fog: You can explore the dark, dreary, and dangerous streets of Victorian London, commanding Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, or the invisible man.

  • The Witcher (Steel and Silver): If you prefer high fantasy, you can toss coins to your Witcher and bring hardened monster hunters into the fray.

  • Battle of Legends Vol. 2 & Slings & Arrows: For players who appreciate classic lore and theatrical flair, you can pit ancient heroes against Shakespearean icons.

Because the core system stays beautifully balanced across every single expansion, a hero from a sci-fi universe can easily trade blows with a character from classical literature without breaking the game.

The Perfect Fast-Paced Addition to Family Game Night

While Unmatched shines as a cutthroat, highly competitive dueling system for tournament players, it remains incredibly accessible for families. The rules can be explained in just a few minutes, making it easy for teens and parents to jump straight into the action. It serves as a spectacular introduction to tactical positioning and hand management, teaching players to anticipate opponent plays and bait out powerful cards.

Thanks to the snappy fifteen-to-thirty-minute playtime, a bitter defeat never stings for too long. Games resolve quickly, letting you immediately demand a revenge-fueled rematch or swap characters to try out a totally fresh tactical approach. Its visual charm, featuring stunning comic-book artwork and high-quality miniatures, keeps everyone at the table fully immersed in the unfolding duel.
