Every year on March 3, the world marks World Wildlife Day: a reminder that wild animals and plants are not background scenery. They are life-support systems.
Wildlife sustains us in ways we often overlook. From food and medicine to shelter and livelihood, biodiversity underpins daily life. Entire communities depend on healthy ecosystems. And across the globe, scientists, conservationists, Indigenous peoples, and local stewards continue the difficult, necessary work of protecting habitats so species can survive not just today, but for generations to come.
One of the biggest reasons we chose to feature the Philippine Eagle on the cover of Kalikasan: Cascadia PH Edition is awareness.
It’s easy to say we want to save our wildlife. Most of us agree on that. But conservation is not just about protecting animals in isolation. It’s about safeguarding the forests they soar above, the watersheds that sustain them, the entire ecosystems that make their survival possible.
The Philippine Eagle is an apex predator. At the top of the food chain, it regulates populations of prey species and helps maintain ecological balance. When apex predators decline, ecosystems destabilize. Vegetation patterns shift. Biodiversity decreases. The web of life begins to fray. The condition of our national bird reflects the condition of our forests. And in many ways, it reflects our national priorities. A thriving eagle signals thriving ecosystems. A struggling eagle signals something far deeper.
Through a humble board game, we hope to spark that connection. By building habitats and seeing how balance matters on the table, we’re gently reminding ourselves that in the real world, these landscapes are not tiles to rearrange. They are living systems we are responsible for protecting.
