Stepping into Fundación Sansó, tucked away in the peaceful pocket of San Juan, the sheer depth of Juvenal Sansó’s vision is immediately striking. Much like our previous deep dives into the legacies of Abdulmari Imao, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz and Larry Alcala, Sansó’s work feels less like a static gallery and more like a living archive of a complex, multicultural soul. He spent decades mastering the art of atmosphere, blending European roots with a deep, poetic love for Philippine landscapes.
That space took on a different energy during our game day last November. We partnered with Ugly Duck for a game day, and there was something special about sharing a meal and rolling dice in a place dedicated to a man who also understood the art of "play" through his extensive work in theater and costume design. Seeing his operatic set sketches while we gathered over games reminded me that creativity is rarely confined to a single medium. Sansó may have been born in Spain, but his choice to stay and create here proves he is Filipino by heart.
His history also carries a weight that feels particularly relevant today. Many of his darker, more jagged compositions were born from the trauma of surviving the war, which is a stark reminder of how conflict shapes the human spirit. With the heavy atmosphere of current global events, turning to his work feels like a necessary reprieve. His ability to transform pain into these hauntingly beautiful, enduring landscapes shows that art can be a place to process our collective anxiety and find a bit of peace.
A visit to the museum in San Juan isn't just about seeing paintings. It is an experience of the lifelong evolution of a master who helped shape how we see our own horizons.

The Life and Legacy of Juvenal Sansó
Juvenal Sansó (1929–2025) was a Spanish-born artist whose glowing, surreal landscapes and florals basically defined postwar Filipino modernism. Though he was born in Catalonia, he moved to Manila as a kid in 1934, where his family started the well-known wrought-iron business, El Arte Español.
His early work was hit hard by the trauma of WWII, resulting in a "Black Period" full of dark, expressionist imagery. But as he channeled those experiences into his painting and printmaking, his style shifted into something much more vibrant—think dreamlike, imaginary coastlines and trippy plants, often inspired by his time in Brittany, France.
Sansó was seriously well-trained, studying under masters like Fernando Amorsolo at UP before heading to Rome and Paris to polish his craft. Today, his work is tucked away in over 20 museums globally, and he’s got a trophy shelf to match, including the Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit and top honors from both Spain and France.
Keeping the Sansó Legacy Alive (and Playable)
We recently marked the first anniversary of Juvenal Sansó’s passing, but his spirit is still very much felt. What began in 2014 as a tribute to his genius has evolved into a major cultural hub in San Juan. It does a lot more than display paintings. This center is truly dedicated to lifting up the arts through scholarships, grants, and various community projects.
While the Museo and the Foundation started as separate things, they merged back in 2016 to better serve the art community. Today, it’s home to a massive collection of 700 works, including everything from his paintings and etchings to experimental sculptures. They even have 2,000 cliché-verre pieces that cover his whole career.
Beyond the art itself, the Fundacion Sansó Archives keep his documents, tools, and personal memorabilia organized as a source of inspiration for everyone. They also handle the heavy lifting of authentication. By providing Certificates of Authenticity, they protect collectors and help keep forgeries out of the market. They even work with the families of other Filipino artists to keep an eye out for fakes.
The best part? Scholarship programs are the real heart of the foundation. Following Mr. Sansó’s own wishes to support students, they’ve been providing financial aid, mentorship, and exhibition spots through their Fine Arts Student Stipend Program since 2016.
Art You Can Actually Play
I’ve always felt that art appreciation shouldn’t stay trapped inside a museum. It belongs at your gaming table too. We hope this project sparks some curiosity and gets people talking. By bringing icons like Imao into the tabletop world, we’re turning our heritage into something you can touch, experience, and share with your favorite people.
Let’s keep supporting our local creators. You can help champion these legacies by picking up Modern Art: Philippine Edition. This is a piece of history you can actually own.
A huge thank you to Fundacion Sansó for partnering with us. We’re so grateful for their help in making this project happen and for everything they do to preserve Filipino artistry.
