Celebrating a Legacy: Abdulmari Imao in Modern Art PH
Published on  Updated on

As we celebrate Eid’l Fitr, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the diverse stories and rich heritage that define our nation. At Gaming Library, we wanted to honor that spirit by featuring the legendary Abdulmari Asia Imao in Modern Art: Philippine Edition.

Having the first and only Muslim National Artist in this collection is a milestone for us. His work isn't just art; it’s a bridge between faiths and cultures. This is exactly why we chose his iconic Sarimanok for the game's cover. The Sarimanok is a mythical bird and a symbol of good fortune, protection, and the vibrant soul of Mindanao that Imao spent his life sharing with the world.

The Legacy of Abdulmari Imao

Abdulmari Asia Imao, a proud Tausug from Jolo, Sulu, holds the singular distinction of being the Philippines’ first and, so far, only Muslim National Artist. His illustrious journey began at the University of the Philippines, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts as a Commission on National Integration scholar. This foundation launched a globe-spanning academic career, notably as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Kansas, where he obtained his master’s degree in sculpture in 1962, specializing in the intricate craft of brass casting.

Following his graduation, Imao’s quest for technical mastery continued through a fellowship from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied creative sculpture in ceramic technology. This was followed by a grant from Columbia University, allowing him to expand his range into photography and documentary filmmaking. Historically, he became the first Asian to receive the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) travel grant, an honor that allowed him to immerse himself in the major museums of Europe for a full year.

Drawing from his deep immersion in both Western art and the varied Muslim communities of Mindanao, Imao pioneered a unique trajectory for modern Philippine art. His vision moved intentionally counter to many of his peers; rather than looking solely toward Western movements for inspiration, he looked inward. He revisited tradition and reinterpreted it through a modern aesthetic, proving that indigenous heritage could serve as the primary engine for contemporary innovation.

This profound love for heritage is vividly captured in his abstraction of vine-like okir (or ukkil) patterns, minarets, and the geometric motifs that traditionally adorn the brassware and textiles of the Maranao, Tausug, and Sama-Badjao peoples. These elements were seamlessly translated into his paintings and sculptures, often blended with mythical animals like the Naga and, of course, the Sarimanok. His work frequently featured the vibrant fish of his childhood in Sulu, rendered in brilliant blues, reds, and yellows. To Imao, these motifs expressed a deep appreciation for the natural world as a divine gift and the handiwork of the Supreme Artist.

Islamic calligraphy also served as a vital source of inspiration, acting as both a spiritual subject and a comprehensive aesthetic system. As both a scholar and an artist, Imao expressed the truths of his faith through styles ranging from angular Kufic to majestic Muhaqqaq. Imbued with symmetry and movement, these motifs are often attributed with talismanic virtues of protection and bounty.

This wealth of expression defined Imao’s five-decade career, earning him accolades including the TOYM Award (1968), the Most Outstanding Fulbright Scholar (1980), and his ultimate recognition as National Artist for the Visual Arts in 2006.

Support Filipino Art and Play

Art appreciation shouldn’t just be something you do in a museum, it belongs at your gaming table too! We hope that this starts a curiosity and a conversation. By bringing icons like Imao into the tabletop world, we’re making our national heritage something you can actually touch, experience, and share with your friends and family.

Let’s keep championing our local creators. You can support the legacy of our National Artists by bringing home Modern Art: Philippine Edition. More than just a game; it’s a piece of history you can own.

Huge thanks to Fundacion Sanso for partnering with us to make this project a reality and for their dedication to preserving Filipino artistry.
