It’s hard to believe how much time has flown since we first launched Coup: Philippine Edition. It feels like just yesterday we were nervously and excitedly putting this out into the world. Coup PH was a massive milestone for us. There is an immense, quiet pride (and nerves) in taking a globally loved tabletop game and dressing it in our own culture. We wanted to prove that Filipino themes belong on the modern board gaming map. That leap of faith with Coup paved the way for projects we are incredibly proud of: from the vibrant auction blocks of Modern Art: Philippine Edition, to the delicious, chaotic kitchen of Sinigang, and most recently, the stunning landscapes of Kalikasan: Cascadia PH Edition.
None of this would have been possible without the breathtaking brushstrokes of local artist Camille Chua-Tan. Working with Camille wasn't just about getting "pretty art" for a box; it was about highlighting the sheer depth, beauty, and importance of contemporary Filipino art. Her illustrations gave life and soul to characters we only ever read about in textbooks. So much so that this version of the game is very much sought after in the international community. (Hey, pinoy pride!)
The Need to Be Present: Why We Still Play Face-to-Face
We’ve been thinking a lot lately about why we play.
A while back, a fascinating discussion on Reddit asked a simple question: Why are the most popular party games almost always about lying to your friends? Why do we gravitate toward social deduction?
The truth is, we are living in a deeply digital, hyper-connected world where we’ve never been more isolated. For a while, online social deduction games like Among Us kept us sane during lockdowns. But pixels on a screen can only do so much. We eventually realized that we didn't just want to play; we wanted to be together. Physically. In the same room.
There is an irreplaceable magic in looking someone in the eye, watching their throat bob as they swallow hard, or seeing their fingers twitch when they claim to be the Gobernador-Heneral (Captain, in the game of Coup). It’s why we’ve seen such a massive rise in the popularity of physical social deduction games like Avalon, Blood on the Clocktower, and of course, Coup.
These games are community builders. They strip away our screens and force us to be fully present. When we sit around a table to play, laugh, bluff, and accuse each other, we are doing something deeply human. We are connecting. We are asserting our need for real, un-algorithmic relationships.

We get to take the high-stakes, stressful theater of modern Philippine politics and shrink it down into something we can laugh at, control, and ultimately defeat.

I’ll never forget the night I taught Coup: Philippine Edition to a group of complete tabletop beginners in Gaming Library in Greenbelt. At first, they were hesitant, carefully reading the reference cards. But within two rounds, something magical happened. The game completely stripped away their shyness, and they stepped into the roles.
Suddenly, the room transformed into a 19th-century courtroom. The accents came out, the posture changed, and they started speaking in pure, dramatic Filipino.
"Sa ngalan ng batas, ako ang Gobernador-Heneral at kinukumpiska ko ang iyong mga salapi!" one shouted, slamming a hand down.
Without missing a beat, another shot back, "Ipagpaumanhin ninyo, Heneral, ngunit ako ang Ambassador... at ipinagbabawal ko iyan."
The room erupted. In that moment, it wasn't just about winning points; it was living theater. They were fully, beautifully present, caught up in the shared joy of storytelling. That is the power of this game. It doesn't just sit on a table; it pulls something visceral out of us.
