There is something transformative about stepping into the quiet, sun-drenched halls of the National Museum of Fine Arts. During a recent visit, I found myself drawn to Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) North Hall, home to the Federico Aguilar Alcuaz exhibit. Standing among his giant tapestries, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of pride. Much like our previous look at the legendary Abdulmari Imao, being in the presence of Alcuaz’s work reminds us that art is a legacy to be lived and shared.

Born in Manila on June 6, 1932, Federico A. Aguilar was the sixth of eleven children. His academic journey was unique; while he studied law at San Beda College and Ateneo de Manila University, his true passion led him to pursue a Fine Arts degree at the University of the Philippines (UP) simultaneously.

During his time at UP, he was mentored by the absolute titans of Philippine art, including National Artists Fernando Amorsolo (painting) and Guillermo Tolentino (sculpture). He also honed his critical eye in art appreciation classes led by the influential Fernando Zobel.

Conquering the Spanish Art Scene

The 1950s marked the start of a decorated career. After winning top prizes at the UP and Shell Art Competitions, Alcuaz received a life-changing scholarship—with the help of Zobel and the Jesuits—to study at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.

His talent flourished in Europe, particularly in Barcelona, where he earned prestigious honors such as the Premio Francisco Goya (1958) and the Premio Moncada (1957). These years solidified his reputation as a world-class artist with a distinctly global perspective.

Global Recognition & National Honors

Alcuaz’s acclaim soon reached Paris, where he was recognized with the Decoration of Arts, Letters, and Sciences and the Order of French Genius in 1964. Despite his international success, his heart remained connected to home.

In 2007, the Philippine government awarded him the Presidential Medal of Merit, followed by the Gawad Diwa ng Lahi in 2008. The ultimate recognition came in 2009, when he was declared a National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts (formally conferred in 2016).

A Lasting Artistic Legacy

Federico Aguilar Alcuaz passed away on February 2, 2011, leaving behind a massive body of work that spans over 55 years. Today, his masterpieces are housed in over 20 major museums and institutions worldwide, including:

  • Museum of Contemporary Art (Barcelona & Madrid)

  • Gulbenkian Foundation Museum (London)

  • Museum of Modern Art (Warsaw & Krakow)

  • Philips Cultural Museum (Netherlands)

His influence was further immortalized in the 2005 book Parallel Texts by Rod Paras Perez, which featured 200 of his paintings and served as the catalog for a major rotating exhibition at the Ayala Museum.

Support Filipino Art and Play

Art appreciation shouldn’t just be something you do in a museum, it belongs at your gaming table too! We hope that this starts a curiosity and a conversation. By bringing icons like Imao into the tabletop world, we’re making our national heritage something you can actually touch, experience, and share with your friends and family.

Let’s keep championing our local creators. You can support the legacy of our National Artists by bringing home Modern Art: Philippine Edition. More than just a game; it’s a piece of history you can own.

Huge thanks to Fundacion Sanso for partnering with us to make this project a reality and for their dedication to preserving Filipino artistry.
