Another year, another four days spent staring longingly at my phone screen while the entire tabletop world descended upon Indianapolis. Having ALL ABOARD EXPO in the Philippines keeps the FOMO manageable, but watching thousands of gamers sprint into the Indiana Convention Center still hits. While everyone else was rushing exhibit halls and rolling fresh dice, I was anchored to my couch, refreshing social feeds, binging recap videos, and living vicariously through mountains of haul photos.
To appreciate the sheer scale of the envy, you have to understand what Gen Con actually represents. Long before it filled massive Midwestern convention halls, Gen Con started back in 1968 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was founded by Gary Gygax, the legendary co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, as a small gathering of war game enthusiasts called the Geneva Art Games Convention. Over the decades, it grew from a basement-level gathering into the undisputed crown jewel of North American tabletop gaming. It eventually moved to Indianapolis in 2003, drawing over 70,000 attendees each summer. For four days a year, Indy becomes the absolute Mecca of board games, TCGs, and RPGs.
When the Weather Decided to Play Its Own Campaign
Usually, the ultimate crisis at Gen Con involves missing out on an exclusive promo deck or waiting two hours in line for a food truck. This year, the weather took over as Dungeon Master and threw a severe environmental hazard directly onto the convention floor.
A severe storm tore through central Indiana, triggering a full tornado warning across downtown Indianapolis. Over the convention loudspeakers, thousands of attendees were instructed to take shelter in interior hallways, restrooms, and closets. Then came the plot twist. The storm was so intense that rain started bursting through the ceiling of the convention center itself.
Videos showed literal waterfalls cascading onto the playtest floors and exhibit booths. Staff scrambled with oversized garbage cans to catch the deluge while gamers frantically shielded their newly acquired, expensive cardboard treasures from water damage. Seeing people ducking raindrops on an indoor exhibit floor felt surreal.
Yet in true tabletop fashion, the community handled the emergency like a high-level party taking a surprise hit. People shared laughs in cramped shelter spots, cheered when the tornado warning lifted after a few hours, and immediately went back to rolling dice once the damp carpet dried out.
Highlight Games from GENCON 2026
Looking at the BoardGameGeek People’s Choice Most Wanted list (focusing strictly on titles available for purchase on the showroom floor), a few standouts are drawing massive crowds. Here is a look at the top 10 releases players are lining up to grab this year.

10. Thunder Road: Vendetta – Ignition
-
Publisher: Restoration Games
If you love chaotic vehicular combat but want a lighter box, Thunder Road: Vendetta – Ignition serves up high-speed mayhem in a streamlined package. It strips out player elimination, letting wrecked cars rejoin at nearby pit stops so everyone stays in the race until the finish line.
Speaking of fast, high-stakes games, if you prefer tight head-to-head strategy over high-octane racing, this next auction game steps up the pressure.

9. Railway Boom
-
Publisher: Japanime Games / Arclight
Set during Japan's late 19th-century industrial expansion, Railway Boom casts players as ambitious tycoons building rail empires. Designed by Simone Luciani and Hisashi Hayashi with art by Ian O'Toole, it features a clever multi-stage auction system where players use different resources to secure turn order and optimize transport lines.
From building train networks across Japan, let’s pivot to a much stealthier, late-night operation.

8. Night at the Zoo
-
Publisher: Capstone Games
The animals snuck out for a night on the town, and now they need to sneak back in before the zookeepers notice! In Night at the Zoo, players draft terrain tiles to build paths across their player boards and trigger animal movements. Each species moves and scores differently (from sliding penguins to sprinting cheetahs), making every round a fresh spatial puzzle.
If managing escaped zoo animals sounds wild, wait until you try managing real-world modern board games.

7. The Game Maker’s Metagame
-
Publisher: Bezier Games
Ditch the corporate grind and run your own board game manufacturing empire. The Game Maker’s Metagame is a love letter to the hobby, featuring over 300 real-world titles from 100+ publishers like Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, and Ark Nova. Driven by a central warehouse rondel, players select and spend multi-use components to build games, upgrade facilities, and fulfill high-value contracts.
While this meta-Euro lets you manufacture hundreds of titles, our next game focuses on hyper-focused 2-player duels.

6. Compile: Main 3
-
Publisher: Greater Than Games
Dominate your opponent’s Protocols with card actions and compile your reality first. Compile: Main 3 brings 12 fresh Protocols fully compatible with the rest of the series, themed around the Seven Deadly Sins. This set also introduces an official Solo Mode, pitting you against an automated BOT across 12 escalating scenarios.
If you enjoy intense 1v1 card battles, this next sci-fi Euro takes resource efficiency underground.

5. Drillers
-
Publisher: Czech Games Edition (CGE)
Pilot your custom mech into an abandoned subterranean mine to harvest corporate riches. In Drillers, digging deeper drains your fuel and tightens decision spaces. As players deploy drones to sell minerals and upgrade their mechs, their actions alter the subterranean landscape for everyone at the table.
Digging deep underground takes serious cooperation, which leads directly into another major release from a legendary card game series.
4. The Crew: Journey to the Ends of the Earth
-
Publisher: KOSMOS
The hit cooperative trick-taking series returns with The Crew: Journey to the Ends of the Earth. Tracking clues from Mount Everest to the Amazon rainforest, players tackle a 25-stage campaign packed with shifting mission objectives, variable constraints, and tight team communication.
From subterranean trick-taking journeys, let's shrink down to something you can take anywhere.

3. Wingspan Pocket
-
Publisher: Stonemaier Games
Wingspan Pocket distills the core engine-building experience into a fast, portable card game. On your turn, you simply activate a single row of cards. Every card features food on one face and a bird on the other, using icon-driven powers (and new green ongoing benefits) to keep turns snappy without sacrificing strategic depth.
While bird-drafting offers a friendly puzzle, our next title brings head-to-head competitive dungeon design.

2. Lairs
-
Publisher: Kids Table Board Gaming (KTBG)
You’ve earned a shot at the Adventurers Guild, but a rival stands in your way. In Lairs, players build a devious dungeon full of traps, walls, and monsters for their rival to navigate, while simultaneously trying to survive and loot the maze built for them. It’s a 35-minute showdown of deduction, skill upgrades, and spatial planning.
And finally, taking the #1 spot on this year's most wanted list is an epic sci-fi strategy game about reshaping the cosmos.

1. Entropy
-
Publisher: Board & Dice
Humanity has learned to master the universe's mechanics, and your final exam as a Scientist candidate has arrived. In Entropy, players move their Scientist around a central action rondel to create solar systems, ignite stars, balance biomes, and seed planets with life. It combines engine building with tight tactical movement as you race to outmaneuver rival apprentices.
