Unmatched Asia Championships FAQ - Gaming Library
Published on  Updated on

With the biggest Unmatched Asia Championships prize pool on the line, players from across the region are gearing up for the most high-stakes tournament run of their lives. At this level, every detail counts—from hero picks and matchup mastery to travel logistics and mental endurance.

To ensure you’re fully prepared before stepping into the arena, we’ve gathered the most frequent questions from the community.

Note: This is a living FAQ. We’ll be updating this guide regularly as new questions are reviewed by our judging panel, so check back often to stay ahead of the meta.

Preparation & Registration

1. Is an EXPO pass required, or is the Tournament Ticket enough? Both are required. You must have a valid ALL ABOARD EXPO pass (1-Day, 4-Day, or VIP) in addition to your tournament ticket to participate.

2. I didn't receive a confirmation email for my registration. This usually happens if you placed your order using a phone number instead of an email. Please message us on Facebook with your phone number and email address, and we will manually send your confirmation.

3. What happens if I’m late for the first round? Can I get a refund? Absence in the assigned table during roll call will mean an automatic disqualification. Please note that all tournament tickets are non-refundable.

4. What if I don’t own five official fighters? You are responsible for securing your own 5-hero roster ahead of time. If you’re short a few heroes, we recommend reaching out to the Unmatched Philippines community—players are often happy to lend sets! We will also have plenty of stock available for purchase at the EXPO shop.

5. If certain sets are banned, are their maps also banned (e.g., T-Rex Paddock, Marvel maps)? Yes. If a set is banned from the tournament, the associated maps are also removed from the pool.

6. Are the Semi-Finals (Day 2) auto-qualifiers allowed to compete in the Day 1 Play-Ins? No. Auto-qualifiers are already seeded for Day 2 and cannot participate in the Play-In rounds.

7. Where do I register my fighter roster? Can I change them for Day 2?

You can register your roster via this link. The deadline for registration is May 29, 12:00 PM. Note that your choice is final—you must stick with the same 5 fighters for the duration of the tournament (both Day 1 and Day 2).

* If multiple players registered under the same order number, each player may still register separately by using a unique Challonge name (alias or identifier) for the tournament.

8. Can we pay on site? Or are we required to pay ahead of time?

To avoid vacant slots, all registered players are required to complete their payment on or before May 22, 11:59 PM. Any unpaid slots after the deadline will be automatically cancelled and given to players on the waitlist.

If you have chosen to pay at the venue when you ordered the ticket, kindly send us your Order# on Facebook or Instagram so we can resend an invoice for you to secure your payment.

Players may still register for the Waitlist. However, this doesn't guarantee seats yet, and waitlisted players must still be present during roll call on May 30 before 10:50 AM for a chance to claim any available slots.

Tournament Proper

1. How to set the chess clock?

A. Go to chessclock.org (will require internet connection) and follow the settings below:

  1. Time difference between players ➡️off

  2. Minutes per player ➡️5

  3. Extra seconds ➡️60

  4. Timing method ➡️Bronstein

  5. Leave the rest and click the “Go!” button.

B. Download an offline app that will provide the same settings 5 Minutes + 60 extra seconds. See Android option below.

2. How do we select our Fighters?

We’ll follow the 1-2-2-1 draft. See our Judge Taj’s video below.

3. What if an attack is invalid and the opponent has already revealed a card to defend (e.g., attacking with a scheme or defense card)?

We’ll follow the UMLeague “Illegal Plays/Penalties” section: Illegal plays will resolve differently based upon the type of card played:

Scheme- Simply take the card back to hand and rewind gamestate.
Attack- Card is discarded without effect but the action is retained. Defender chooses to either keep their defense card in hand or shuffle it into the deck and draw another.
Defense- Defense card is discarded without effect and the attack goes through undefended.

4. Where can we see the pairings?

We'll show the pairings on a screen at the 2nd floor. You can also check the Challonge link provided.

5. When resolving disputes, what do players need to do?

Pause the timer. Call a judge.
