If you've been around this blog for a bit (or caught my bio), you probably know I’m deep into D&D; both as a player and a DM. And naturally, that comes with a massive dice obsession. I’m sitting on at least 10+ sets right now, which is a solid 70+ dice if we’re counting. There is just something so satisfying about the weight and the roll.

That love definitely spills over into dice games. There’s a reason they never go out of style: they’re portable, you can teach the rules in two minutes, and they have a tactile "click-clack" energy that’s hard to beat. The only problem? I’m pretty sure the dice hate me. My luck is genuinely tragic. Case in point: I was playing Spots last weekend and famously uttered the forbidden words, "What could go wrong?"

(Everything went wrong. HAHAHA.)

Modern dice games have come a long way from just rolling for high scores. Some are surprisingly strategic, others are pure, unadulterated chaos, and most of them hit that sweet spot where kids and hobbyists can actually enjoy them together.

If you're looking to add to your collection, here are 10 popular dice games that are easy to pack and a blast to play.

Classic Dice Games Everyone Can Jump Into

These are the gateway games: easy to teach, quick to play, and perfect for when you have a mix of non-gamers and veterans at the table.

1. Mountain Goats

This one always catches people off guard. It looks adorable and simple, but the tension is real. You’re rolling dice to move your goats up various mountains to score points, but here’s the kicker: only the goat at the very top scores. If someone else reaches the peak, they kick you right back down to the bottom. It’s a classic "king of the hill" mechanic that turns a chill game into a heated rivalry.

2. Spots

As I mentioned, I learned the hard way that this game is a cruel mistress. In Spots, you’re trying to roll dice to fill up "spots" on cute dog cards. If you roll a number you can’t use, it goes into your yard. If your yard total exceeds 7, you bust. It’s pure push-your-luck. The storytelling comes from that moment you decide to roll "just one more die" and inevitably ruin your entire turn.

3. Sushi Dice

This is high-speed chaos. You and an opponent are simultaneously racing to roll the specific ingredients needed for a sushi platter. If you see your opponent roll a "Yuck" symbol, you can scream it out to make them re-roll everything. It’s loud, fast, and usually ends with someone accidentally throwing a die across the room.

Travel-Friendly Dice Games That Pack Light

Small boxes, quick setup: ideal for board game nights at a café or killing time during a layover.

4. Piña Coladice

If you want something that feels like a vacation, this is it. It’s essentially a tropical twist on Bingo or Tic-Tac-Toe using dice. You’re trying to roll specific combinations to place your tokens on a 4x4 grid. It’s light enough that you can play it while actually sipping a cocktail, but there’s just enough strategy in choosing which drink to "craft" to keep it interesting.

5. Rolling Realms Redux

A "Roll-and-Write" masterpiece from Jamey Stegmaier. Every player uses the same dice roll, but you’ll apply them to different "realms" inspired by other board games. It’s like a mini-puzzle every turn. Since everyone works with the same numbers, you can’t blame the dice for losing—only your own brain!

PS: Love the references to other board games!

Creative Dice Games With a Modern Twist

These games treat dice as more than just random number generators: they’re tools for combat, empire-building, and ecosystem management.

6. Dice Throne

Think Yahtzee, but you’re a Barbarian or a Moon Elf trying to smack your friends. You get three rolls to activate your hero’s unique abilities. The production value is insane, and the "combat" feels weighty. It’s one of those rare games where even if you roll poorly, you can usually find a tactical way to upgrade your cards and turn the tide.

PS: There is a growing Dice Throne community with monthly tournaments in Gaming Library. We also have a big Dice Throne tournament in ALL ABOARD EXPO!

7. Tiletum

For the heavy hitters. In Tiletum, dice represent both resources and actions. If you take a high-value die, you get a lot of resources but very few action points. If you take a low die, you get a lot of actions but no materials to carry them out. It’s a brilliant balancing act set in the Renaissance that will make your head spin in the best way possible.

8. Nestlings

This is a beautiful "worker placement" game where your workers are... you guessed it, dice. You’re rolling to determine which biomes you can visit to gather food for your baby birds. It’s a "gentle" game, but the competition for resources in the meadows can get surprisingly cutthroat.

9. Spectacular

You’re building an animal park, drafting dice that represent food for your species. What’s unique here is the drafting: you pick a tile, then pass the remaining ones to your neighbor. You have to balance the numbers on the dice with the habitats you’ve built. It’s a satisfying puzzle that feels like you’re actually curating a conservation project.

10. Saltfjord

A spiritual successor to Santa Maria, this is a strategic powerhouse. You’re drafting dice to activate rows and columns in your 19th-century Norwegian fishing village. It’s all about building an "engine": where one die roll triggers a massive chain reaction of resources, trade, and technology.

The Ultimate Classic: King of Tokyo (and King of Tokyo: Godzilla)

I couldn't write a dice list without mentioning the GOAT. But if you really want to crank the scale up to "city-leveling" proportions, King of Tokyo: Godzilla is where it’s at.

THE TRUE KING OF MONSTERS IS FINALLY HERE! You aren't just playing generic monsters anymore; you’re stepping into the scales of Toho’s legendary Kaijus like King Ghidorah, Rodan, Mothra, and the big G himself. It still uses that snappy, "Yahtzee-on-steroids" system we love, but it adds a chaotic twist with Event Cards that mess with everyone at the table. Plus, for the fans who love a good transformation arc, it includes Evolution Cards right out of the box.

It’s the ultimate social dice game: fast, mean, and incredibly satisfying when you roll enough claws to boot your friends out of the city.
