How to Play LEGO Brick Like This: Build, Guess, and Laugh Your Way to Victory

Hello, Duane here! Lately I find myself gravitating toward light party games since I have been meeting a lot of new friends. Picture this. You arrive at a hangout with a tiny party game in your bag and suddenly you are the person who turns the vibe from drab to fab. This board game has officially joined my favorites.

If you have ever wanted to turn your LEGO builds into a party game filled with laughter, teamwork, and creative chaos, LEGO Brick Like This is exactly the game you are looking for. It is part puzzle, part communication challenge, and part volcanic eruption of giggles. You cannot see the card your teammate is describing. They cannot touch the bricks. Both of you are racing against time. It is beautiful nonsense.

Perfect for families, barkadas, coworkers, and even team building sessions. Brick Like This transforms everyday LEGO bricks into a hilarious test of teamwork. Bonus trivia to impress your group. LEGO is actually a combination of the Danish words "leg godt" which means "play well". Talk about destiny.

Let us break down this fun little building game.

What Is LEGO Brick Like This?

In LEGO Brick Like This, teams of two race to build models based on Shape Cards. One player becomes the Instructor (or Contractor if you want to lean into the energy). The other becomes the Builder (or DPWH Engineer). The Instructor can talk but cannot touch any pieces. The Builder can build but cannot look at the card. No ghost projects allowed!

Each box includes:

  • 48 LEGO bricks

  • 92 Shape Cards

  • 20 Challenge Cards

  • 1 sand timer

  • 1 rulebook

Fun fact. LEGO produces around 36 billion bricks a year. That is about 112 bricks per second. Enough to build a literal highway of plastic dreams.

Setting Up the Game

Setup is quick and easy.

  1. Separate the Shape Cards into piles numbered 5, 6, 7, and 8. Shuffle each pile.

  2. Place all LEGO bricks in the center of the table.

  3. Set your timer. The box comes with a 30 second sand timer.

  4. Form your teams. The game supports 2 to 8 players.

Pick your first Instructor and Builder then get ready to build your way into chaos.

Brick Like This Game Rules and Mechanics

The game lasts six rounds. All teams build simultaneously. Every round follows three steps.

Step 1: Choose a Shape Card

Teams pick one Shape Card. The Instructor looks at the picture and describes it without showing the card.

Shape Cards are numbered:
5 = Easy
6 = Moderate
7 = Challenging
8 = Expert level chaos

Higher numbers mean higher points and wilder shapes. Strategic moment. Do you play safe with a low value card and pressure other teams by finishing early, or flex your confidence with a trickier build for more points?

Step 2: Build the Model

Once everyone has chosen a card, Instructors say “Go!” and start describing the model. Builders assemble the shape as accurately as possible.

Important rules:

  • The Instructor can only talk. No touching or pointing.

  • The Builder can only handle bricks. No peeking at the card.

If your team breaks a rule, the Builder must start over. When you think your model is correct, shout “Done!” and flip the timer to pressure the rest.

Step 3: Score Shape Points

Models are compared to the Shape Card.

  • Exact or close match: Full points

  • Partial or missing details: No points

After six rounds, total your points. The highest scoring team becomes the official Master Builder. Cue applause and maybe a victory pose.

Advanced Mode: Challenge Cards

Once you have mastered the basics, spice it up with Challenge Cards. These add twists like:

  • Easy: Instructor cannot say color names - 1 bonus point

  • Medium: Builder can only use one hand - 2 bonus points

  • Hard: Builder must close their eyes at certain times - 3 bonus points

The first team to finish has a chance to win the bonus, only if they get the structure correctly.

Fun fact. The tallest LEGO tower ever built stood over 114 feet tall and used more than 500,000 bricks. If that tower had Challenge Cards, no one would have survived the pressure.

More Ways to Play: Team Variants and Kid-Friendly Mode

Brick Like This works great even with small groups.

For 2 to 3 Players

Use the Kid-Friendly Variant:

  • Two players alternate between Instructor and Builder.

  • A third player can act as the Observer to manage scoring and timing.

Perfect for family bonding or cozy game nights.

Tips for Kids

  • Use Shape Cards 5 and 6 to keep things simple.

  • Encourage kids to describe colors, sizes, and directions. This helps develop communication, spatial reasoning, and creativity.

Parents and kids make wonderful teams in this game. Communication becomes learning disguised as play. Take photos after every round. Your kid’s LEGO creations will become a cute timeline of imagination.

Fun fact. The world’s first LEGO minifigure was released in 1978. That little smiling guy began an entire universe of characters, fandoms, and pop culture icons.

Tips and Tricks for Winning the Game

Want to level up your Brick Like This gameplay?

  1. Build in layers.

Start with the base, then stack upward. It helps your Builder visualize structure.

  1. Keep instructions short and precise.

Use simple directions like “two studs left” or “stack the 3x1 blue brick.” Long explanations waste precious seconds.

  1. Rehearse categories.

Shape Cards often fall into familiar types—animals, objects, vehicles. Recognizing these patterns helps you give faster clues.

  1. Watch your tone.

Panic makes Builders rush. Calm, confident directions lead to better builds (and fewer upside-down disasters).

  1. Embrace the chaos.

Half the fun is seeing how wildly your teammate interprets your clues. Celebrate the weird builds because they make the best stories!

Why Brick Like This Is Fun for Everyone

Kids love the building challenge. Adults love the pressure and the communication twists. Everyone ends up laughing. It is also a fantastic icebreaker for meetups, family gatherings, and board game cafes.

I brought this game to the Bears and Board Games event and it was an instant hit. The vibe is very similar to Team 3 or Lift It Party. Both are excellent if you want more chaotic building energy.
