The very first expansion for ROOT! I'm just excited to be able to pit new factions against the already existing 4 on the base game. It enables the ability to have 6 player games which only makes the game even more chaotic. This is too much for me. I think ROOT is best played as a 4-player game but it's fun every now and then and at least this expansion gives you the option. Granted, the next expansion (The Underworld Expansion) and it also adds a new map but I'll try to explain why you would choose this over that. The Riverfolk Company is easily my favorite faction in ROOT. They play with a public hand and actually try to sell their cards as well as other services to other players in the game. You're going to be negotiating your way to victory with this faction. This adds a lot of social interaction to even the most quiet of tables and promotes table talk and even roleplay which is the main reason why I choose to play board games with other people. I can't love this faction enough. This faction alone is the main reason I bought this expansion. I'm not gonna lie. I still don't quite understand how to play the Lizard Cult correctly. They're a faction whose actions mainly rely on the collective discard pile to dictate which moves they make on the next turn and I'm afraid I can't adapt as well when the discard pile isn't what I expect it to be. They're fairly complicated to play and is more dependent on how the other players play than the other factions. But I'd like to think that learning how to play this faction is a challenge to myself. The game also adds a way to play the game solo with the Mechanical Marquise. This is easily the weakest part of this expansion and is easily worth ignoring. They're heavily unbalanced and you need to pull off a miracle to win against them. A lot of other ROOT players have negative opinions of this faction. If you want to play solo games or with bots in general, just go get the Clockwork Expansion which adds 4 different bots for the 4 base game factions. They're a lot more balanced and actually behave like how they would if an actual person was playing as that faction. The Riverfolk Expansion isn't for everyone. If you're looking to buy an expansion and you don't have any yet, I would say the Underworld Expansion is the better one to buy. But do your research and watch videos how the two factions here play. And if you really like it (like I do with the Riverfolk Company), go get this expansion.
